If (…) not poate fi înlocuit cu unless în prima condițională din limba engleză. Cele două structuri sunt echivalente. În consecinţă, sensul frazei rămâne acelaşi. Citește mai jos cinci exemple care evidenţiază cum folosim unless în loc de if not.
Remarcăm că, în cazul lui if (…) not, verbul principal este la forma negativă. În cazul lui unless, verbul principal este la forma afirmativă. Propoziția care exprimă consecința condiției este identică în ambele cazuri.
If it does not stop raining, I will not go to the gym today.
Unless it stops raining, I will not go to the gym today.
If John doesn’t invite her to the dance, Sarah will go with Tommy.
