Ce este adverbul de mod?
Adverbul de mod descrie o acțiune. Spre deosebire de adjective (care determină substantive), adverbele determină verbe (sau adjective).
Majoritatea adverbelor de mod din limba engleză se formează prin adăugarea terminației ly la adjectivul din care este derivat adverbul.

Există și adverbe de mod neregulate:
good → well
He is a good driver. → He drives well.
fast → fast
She drives a fast car. → She drives fast.
hard → hard
This is a hard job. → I work hard.
high → high
The mountain is high. → I can jump very high.
Adverbul hard are și forma hardly, dar aceasta înseamnă abia, cu greu și se folosește în structuri precum: I can hardly move. (De abia pot să mă mișc.)
Adverbul high are și forma highly, dar aceasta înseamnă extrem de, foarte și se folosește în structuri precum: I value him highly. (Îl prețuiesc foarte mult.)
Alte observații
Lista adjectivelor care devin adverbe de mod prin adăugarea terminației ly este mult mai lungă decât lista exemplelor din această lecție.
